Peter Karras

Posted by tb4

Wow is about all I can say about these hand cut pieces from Peter Karras. I saw these over at design crush and I just couldn't believe that they were all hand cut by one person. Seriously though each poster is hand cut and individually set, so no two letters (or posters) are alike. Each is cut out of 22 x 30 natural white Archers paper.

Right now just the vowels are up and ready for purchase, but you can order any of the consonants they will just take 6 weeks or so to complete. I'm kind of surprised it doesn't take more than 6 weeks to complete these oh so intricate pieces. Get yours over at the cutty spot, and check out the short time lapse video at the top of the page, it's pretty cool.

Inauguration

Posted by tb4

Were you at the inauguration, do you know someone who went. Well now you can see if you can find them. Gigapan.org has a picture that was taken with a robotic camera and weighs in at 1,474 megapixel, 295 times the standard 5 megapixel camera. Canon pulled together over 200 individual shots of the inauguration to make this possible. Each zoom in takes a second to focus, and then you can see some amazing reactions. Double click on any area to zoom in, have fun searching for yourself and your friends.

Tattoo Tester

Posted by tb4

The tattoo tester from California based graphic designer JuliAnn Miller, is oh so wonderfully clever. The tattoo tester is a kit that allows you to make temporary tattoo transfers onto your body, it comes with carbon paper and transfer paper to help you do so. JuliAnn came up with this kit to help people choose a tattoo design that they know they will love, so that you wont be one of the 6.5 million people who regret their tattoo. The kit also comes with an information-packed brochure on tattoo history and statistics.

The Apple Tree

Posted by tb4

Very interesting jewelry design from the Thailand based studio, The Apple Tree. This piece comes from the underground garden silver collection. The apple tree jewelery was founded in 2005 in Bangkok, Thailand, born out of the frustration of being unable to find jewelery that is different from everything else on the market. Therefore, seeking to create jewelery pieces which combine whimsical elements with the qualities of estate jewelery, the brand The apple tree started.

Megan Auman

Posted by tb4

Beautifully designed double use bracelet designed by Philly designer Megan Auman. Use it as a bracelet that doubles as a coffee cozy or as a coffee cozy that doubles as a bracelet, it is fun and looks good either way.

Megan's work explores the ubiquity of decoration. She is interested in how the same floral forms appear in both textile patterns and decorative ironwork. In her work she takes botanical imagery and distills them into their simplest forms – producing work that is graphic and modern.

Get the cozy/cuff from Megan Auman's etsy shop, along with a lot of other wonderful creations, and check out the rest of her work at her portfolio, here.

Polaroid Mirror

Posted by tb4

With Polaroid instant film going away, designs have been popping up everywhere to keep the beloved format alive in one way or another. The Polaroid mirror by Colin O'Dowd is another one of those products the 2mm mirrored glass with white vinyl border is a fun product, that brings back a little bit of the feel of the old school Polaroid cameras. Although it would be so much better if there was some way to treat the mirror so it gave you the sort of washed out colors that Polaroid instant film is so known for.

Get the Polaroid mirror here for $29.

Paul Smith

Posted by tb4

Beautiful "Mini" print wash bag from British designer Paul Smith. Coming in at around $130 it is a bit expensive for a wash bag, but it is lovely and it will definitely set a piece of your luggage apart from the standard run of the mill luggage.

Structured tailoring and exceptional quality are Paul Smith’s forte. Since the designer showcased his first menswear collection in 1976 the Paul Smith brand has identified itself as unmistakably English with the pre-eminent British designer at its helm.

You can get this piece over at harrods.com.

Vacation Update

Posted by tb4

So vacation was great, but right now I am sitting in the Phoenix airport, just like I have been doing for the last 6 hours. So we were supposed to leave quite a bit ago, but when our plane was coming into Phoenix it was struck by lightening, and it died. Now that I have re-read that it sounds bad, so let me explain a bit more. The plane was struck by lightening while in flight but it was able to land just fine, but after that they found some electrical problem so they grounded the plane, there that sounds better. Now we are flying a different airline and instead of getting home around 7pm, right about the same time I'm putting this post up, we will be getting in around 5am. Traveling is fun. Hopefully everyone out there is having a better day than me.

Jermaine Rogers

Posted by tb4

'Polluted Culture: Volume 2' by Jermaine Rogers will be available for purchase at a random time between the hours of noon and 3pm Mountain Standard Time (that's between 2pm and 5pm Eastern) on Tuesday, February 3, 2009.

This serigraph measures approximately 38 x 20 inches and is screenprinted on gallery bond. It is produced in a strictly limited signed and numbered edition of 100 copies. As in the first 'Polluted Culture' print that Jermaine released back in 2005, the 'Fab Four' are again the specimens for another experiment in culture hijacking.

Jermaine says:
"Seeing the totality of modern popular culture as one whole, dissecting it, and re-attaching its parts is a wonderful and satisfying exercise. Years ago, before the first 'Polluted Culture' print, I did an image for a Mudhoney flyer depicting the Beatles as a grunge band...ripped jeans, Chuck Taylor's, and all. Here, I wanted to revisit that aesthetic in a sense. I chose to take the band that many feel are the modern-day torch bearers of the Beatles, U2. The imagery from the 1987 album, 'The Joshua Tree' was always very striking to me. The starkness and weighty aura surrounding the photographs of the band were almost religious...and actually very prophetic in a sense: this was the album that many feel rocketed them to 'biggest-band-in-the-world' status. To depict the Beatles in this modern 'clothing' was delicious. Pop culture belongs to you and me. We birthed it and groom it every day. 'We are the music makers and the dreamers of the dreams'. Culture is ours to hijack and choreograph. Past popular culture is our plaything. We can do whatever we want with it. You don't need a reason."
