By using a different approach to the design process David Pier developed a revolutionary cup that is unusual and beautiful in appearance and superior in function. The form flows from the shape of hand and mouth, the weight and volume of the contained fluid, and the relations between these. The undulating rim fits the lips better and prevents spills on the side opposite the handle. A level rim would be easy for the factory but would lessen the user’s experience. The oval body brings the center of gravity closer to the hand. The shape helps make the strong porcelain even more resistant to breakage. The shape is attractive and interesting from any angle. The handle and body can be held in several ways, all more comfortable than traditional mugs. The shape breaks free of a nearly universal design constraint of cups, the linear vertical axis, which is dictated by the starting point for most designs being a blank made on a lathe or other such device. By sculpting his prototype from a lump of clay using only the simplest of hand tools, the design no longer is dictated by the design process. Unlike most coffee cups you see in the big coffee shop chains, this isn’t just a gimmicky variation on a tired old shape.

The Pano Chair is a birch plywood filmed piece utilizing digital cutting and tenon and mortise construction. This assembly without glue supports the principle of leverage and mounting strength. Very nice chair and all cut out of a single piece of wood, pretty cool.

Yeah it is Han Solo frozen in carbonite, now if you are not a star wars fan this means absolutely nothing to you, but I am so this is awesome. This is a custom-designed desk for Mark Hall of the Grammy award winning group the Casting Crowns, by Tom Spina Designs. Now when you see this desk you have to always think that someone obviously has it worst off than you, especially the guy frozen into your desk.

Fun advertisements for Ferrero Rocher from the Orchard Advertising Bangalore, India. You don't see Michaelangelo's David and Botticelli's Venus, in very many advertisements theses days, I kind of like it.

Really nice mugs from A+B studio. The mugs started as a way to address the problems of large tea/coffee rounds at the office. It is a very simple yet effective way to order your tea or coffee to your exact specifications, and obviously according to Bryan, in the second picture, you can be as anal about your tea as your want. A+B has some really nice other work, and the site lays out very nicely to boot.
A+B Studio was founded by award winning designers, Alex Lampe and Benji Wiedemann to deliver clear, relevant and innovative design solutions which work seamlessly across multiple media. They create bespoke solutions through a project-focused approach. Their modular company structure enables them to expand and contract on a project-by-project basis. They draw on specialist from varioius disciplines, enriching the end result.

Playfully, Science & Sons plays with proportions of your average house plant. Very fun idea, they are unavailable at the moment but they are pending re-release in spring.
Drawing inspiration from the bonsai, park planters were created to elevate the common household plant to the status of full grown tree. The potted plant becomes the backdrop for an urban park scene. Ranging from dog walkers to flashers and muggers, no two scenes are alike ensuring the autonomy of each piece.

Againstallodds has made some absolutely spectacular spots for Coke Zero. The have shown disembodied tongues, eyeballs and fingers in an extremely cute and very likable way. Solid writing and voice acting have brought to life the characters developed by againstallodd’s superb character animation. These spots are just phenomenal I couldn't stop watching them, the comedy and the look of the characters is just spot on.
The spots were for Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam through Passion, with Derek Picken as creative director and Niklas Rissler art directing. All four spots can be found on Passion’s site.

Nice ad from Leo Burnett Milan, Italy, obviously directed at girls. Creative directors Sergio Rodriguez and Enrico Dorizza have done a nice job of making a very simple direct ad that shows off the product to the demographic they are looking to hit. Plus the website is absolutely phenominal, I can't really read it because it is in Italian but the looks is awesome.

"Your kid’s knowledge could be useful.
This Saturday with El Observador an encyclopedia with everything your kid needs to know about inventions."
Not really sure what they are trying to say here, maybe robots are bad and will try to chase your dad constantly. But if you have this encyclopedia your kids can have the knowledge to stop the robots from becoming our evil overlords. Yeah I think that is what it is trying to say. This ad is by the advertising agency IN, Montevideo, Uruguay and creative director Claudio Invernizzi.

I really like this design from Laurie Beckerman Design. The Tete-a-Tete rocker is made out of Corian, so it is perfect for the outdoor, but allows for a feeling of privacy while a couple enjoys each others company. A little about Laurie Beckerman Designs below and the link at the bottom.
Born in Brooklyn, Laurie Beckerman graduated from New York University with a bachelor's degree in anthropology. She received a bachelor's degree in architecture from Pratt Institute, and, after graduation, designed low-income housing in Brooklyn and Harlem for the Pratt Architectural Collaborative. She also worked for Steven Holl Architects, and in the architectural setting-out shop at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. At the Cathedral, she drafted templates that were used by the stone carvers to create stones for the facade of the Jewish Museum. She spent every lunch hour in the stoneyard learning the craft of carving. Her passion and respect for material deepened, and her desire to become a furniture designer began when she carved her first table out of stone.

A piece of paper cut, folded and deformed was the inspiration for this fruit bowl, Portafrutta. Through its form it suggests where you should put the fruit, produced by OneOff. I really like this design it brings a bit of art and function into your kitchen, along with the lovely flowing nature of the piece.
Doodle was established in 2006 following the collaboration of Tim Boyce and Angela Violiano on a number of projects. After the success of their ceramic objects for Industreal the pair are continuing to develop their projects and ideas.
I added a new picture up top, thanks to Angela over at doodle, the new picture is the production piece in cherry wood, Portafrutta is being produced by Industreal. I definitely like it in the cherry, it looks very nice.

This would be just perfect for me, or anyone who needs a new knife block. I just have a few new kitchen knives that do not fit in my old knife block, this would be great to get them out of the drawer that they are sitting in at the moment.
The Mikoto knife block by French Design House Ekobo. By contributing to the preservation of the environment and continually searching for new and innovative ideas to make beautiful products out of bamboo this company has been one of our favorites from day one. The knife blocks are another example of great and functional design; because the blocks are filled with bamboo skewers, all your knives will fit anywhere in the block.

Really effective billboard advertisement by Cultivator advertising & design. The ad is for giversneeded.org, the website for the Denver rescue mission. Cultivator used pictures of men, women, and children who are homeless to create the word homeless. Over a weeks time they gradually removed the pictures forming the "less" part of the display until they were left with just the word "home." I think it is an extremely effective ad that does a really good job of getting its message across to the average person.

Very cool site to go along with what looks to be an awesome exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Website by Yugo Nakamura, Creative Director, Takayuki Fukatsu, Designer, Erica Sakai, Designer. A little about the exhibition below, the site is linked at the bottom.
Over the past twenty-five years, people have weathered dramatic changes in their experience of time, space, matter, and identity. Individuals cope daily with a multitude of changes in scale and pace—working across several time zones, traveling with relative ease between satellite maps and nanoscale images, and being inundated with information. Adaptability is an ancestral distinction of intelligence, but today’s instant variations in rhythm call for something stronger: elasticity, the product of adaptability plus acceleration. Design and the Elastic Mind explores the reciprocal relationship between science and design in the contemporary world by bringing together design objects and concepts that marry the most advanced scientific research with attentive consideration of human limitations, habits, and aspirations. The exhibition highlights designers’ ability to grasp momentous changes in technology, science, and history—changes that demand or reflect major adjustments in human behavior—and translate them into objects that people can actually understand and use. This Web site presents over three hundred of these works, including fifty projects that are not featured in the gallery exhibition.

I really love when designers take prints from nature and make them look like they belong in your home and not on some horribly tacky persons bed, see most leopard print. The giraffe rug is a bold animal print for the urban jungle. Hand-tufted looped and cut pile lends rich dimension and sumptuous softness. Get it over at west elm, the rug comes in a variety of sizes to fit any space.
